Femi Otedola For 2019? By Keem Abdul

Femi Otedola

In a video that has now gone viral online, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola is seen on-board a “Molue” bus from Sango to Agege in Lagos. No, this was no sequel to Slumdog Millionaire! It was just a sneak peek into the heart of a humble man who despite the trappings of wealth that he has gathered legitimately, still makes an effort to connect with the less privileged in order to do something to alleviate their pains.

Coming hot on the heels of the spread of the video of Femi Otedola’s “Molue” ride was an avalanche of postulations by his teeming supporters and interested spectators to the effect that he is indeed making a run for the office of Executive Governor of Lagos State in the 2019 gubernatorial election. A kite and a Molue bear no semblance to each other yet some people believed he was flying a kite with 2019 in view. The wind that enabled that kite stay up so well came in part from a parody account on microblogging site Twitter which claimed that he would be vying for the office of Lagos State governor in the 2019 governorship election.

He swiftly took to Twitter to dispel the rumours: “My attention has been drawn to a news piece where false information from a parody account was posted. I am a man of the people and I will always be on the side of the masses but I am stating clearly via this medium that I am not running for office.”

Even after such a strong and unequivocal statement, the “Femi Otedola is running for governor” stories have refused to die and it is testament to how influential and likeable he is. Many are disappointed that he has declined this invitation to contest for governor in the upcoming election. During his Molue trip, nobody on the bus seemed to know who he really was, likely because he had done a good job of being discreet despite his popularity. His philanthropy has positively impacted the lives of many people and we are seeing him become as recognizable and accessible as the great MKO Abiola used to be. Whether or not he decides to convert the accruing goodwill into capital for a foray into politics, the genius mind and large heart of Femi Otedola is loved and respected by Nigerians.

It is said that some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them. Femi Otedola was born great and has achieved greatness. Time will tell if he will accept the greatness being thrust upon him by the millions beckoning on him to run for public office.
